"Hey Fellows" WWI Library Campaign Poster by John E. Sheridan (1918)

"Hey Fellows" WWI Library Campaign Poster by John E. Sheridan (1918)

Commissioned by the American Library Association to publicize their part in the Great War, John Sheridan crafted a post-armistice poster appealing for contributions to the Library War Fund. Raising over $5 million from 1917-1918, the ALA's War Work Campaign created 36 libraries in the US and Europe to provide 350,000+ books to the troops, becoming symbols of hope and escape while furnishing solace and stimulus in the midst of a conflict's travails. Here, a soldier symbolizes that these donations ultimately feed both body and soul.
